Wente Family Vineyards, established in 1883 by German immigrant Carl H. Wente in California’s Livermore Valley, is the oldest continuously family-owned and operated winery in the United States! The Wente family is renowned for pioneering California’s wine industry, notably introducing the Wente Clone of Chardonnay in 1912, which now accounts for over 75% of the state’s Chardonnay vineyards.

 

Today, Wente Family Vineyards spans 3,000 acres across Livermore Valley and the Arroyo Seco AVA in Monterey County, California, producing a diverse portfolio of wines including Chardonnay, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Pinot Noir, and Sauvignon Blanc. The winery is also recognized for its commitment to sustainability, being one of the first to receive California Certified Sustainable Vineyard and Winery certification in 2020.

 

Under the leadership of the fifth generation, including Karl, Christine, Jordan, Aly, and Niki Wente, the winery continues to innovate while honoring its rich heritage. In 2023, Wente celebrated its 140th anniversary with events highlighting its legacy and commitment to sustainable practices. Wente Family Vineyards’ enduring legacy and dedication to quality and sustainability have solidified its position as a cornerstone of California’s wine industry.

 

Our guest speaker, Doug Johnson, Certified Sommelier, will guide us through a tasting of six wines, thoughtfully paired with complementing chef-driven selections. Doug “DJ” Johnson is a seasoned executive with over 35 years of experience in the adult beverage industry, having held leadership roles at Jim Beam Brands, Patrón, Diageo, and currently serving as VP of sales for North America at Wente Family Estates for the past 19 years. He has contributed his expertise as a judge on U.S. Sommelier panels for the Food Network and at NFL Super Bowl wine pairing events. A L.A. native, DJ is also passionate about cooking, travel, surfing, and dirt biking.
